Creatine May Help Depression

Creatine may help fight depression in some patients, according to a new systematic review that pooled data from five randomized clinical trials — though the evidence remains too mixed and too limited to support using the popular supplement as a standard treatment.

The trials, conducted in South Korea, the United States, Brazil, Israel, and India, together enrolled 238 participants — 126 given creatine and 112 given a placebo. Participants averaged 36 years old, and most were women; two trials enrolled only women. Four trials focused on major depressive disorder, while one involved people with bipolar disorder experiencing a depressive episode. Because study designs varied so much, researchers evaluated each trial individually rather than combining the results into a single statistic.
