
Uganda has confirmed a Marburg outbreak in the western part of the country, a development that threatens to complicate the government's response to an already active Ebola outbreak in the same region. Uganda's health ministry formally notified the World Health Organization of the case on Tuesday, according to a WHO spokesperson, though Kampala has not yet publicly announced the outbreak itself.
How the Marburg Outbreak Came to Light
Word of the Marburg case surfaced first through official channels rather than a public statement. The U.S. embassy in Kampala issued a level 4 health alert on Monday, warning Americans against travel to Uganda after learning of a possible Marburg case. Uganda's own notification to the WHO, sent the following day, referenced a single confirmed case — but a source familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the real count already stood at two. That source added that the outbreak currently appears to be localized to one area.
Nahid Bhadelia, director of Boston University's Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases, suggested the embassy's early alert may have been intended to push Uganda toward public acknowledgment of information that had likely circulated internally for days. "The embassy releasing this does make me feel like this is something that is a bit more confirmed," she said.
Two Deadly Viruses, One Region
Marburg and Ebola are both filoviruses — a family of viruses that cause similar hemorrhagic fever symptoms and spread the same way, through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids or through the traditional preparation of an infected body for burial. No Vaccine Yet, But Uganda Has Experience
There is currently no licensed vaccine for Marburg, though several candidates are in various stages of testing. Vaccine development against the Bundibugyo Ebola species lags even further behind, with trials still months away according to earlier reporting. Despite the lack of vaccines, Uganda has built a track record of containing filovirus outbreaks quickly; five of the roughly 20 confirmed Marburg outbreaks since the virus was first identified in 1967 occurred within its borders, alongside cases in returning tourists and lab workers exposed to Ugandan wildlife.
That track record is now part of a political argument. Uganda's health minister, Chris Baryomunsi, has pushed for countries including the United States to roll back 21-day entry restrictions on travelers who have passed through Uganda, arguing that strict airport screening keeps the export risk low.
