Knowing how to build an everyday underwear drawer is less about buying more and more about buying in the right ratio. Most drawers fail the same way: too many novelty pieces, not enough of the one style you actually reach for, and nothing that works under the clothes you wear most.
This guide walks through a repeatable method, then applies it using On Gossamer as a worked example, because the brand's range is narrow enough to make the maths clear. Its whole catalogue rests on two fabrics: 100% Peruvian cotton and light-as-air Italian mesh.
Step 1: Count your real laundry cycle
Start with how often you wash, not with how many pairs sound reasonable. If you do laundry weekly, you need at least seven daily pairs plus a small buffer for the days laundry slips. Ten to twelve is the honest number for most people.
Then split that count by use rather than by style. A workable ratio is roughly six everyday pairs, three invisible pairs for fitted clothing, and two or three you keep for occasions. Buying to that ratio stops the classic problem of owning fifteen pairs and wearing four.
Multi-packs make this easy to execute. On Gossamer sells 3-packs across five silhouettes, each bundling three colourways, which means one order covers a category rather than a single day.
Step 2: Choose your fabric lane
This is the decision that determines everything else. Natural fibre or fine synthetic mesh, and ideally some of each.
Cotton is the everyday lane. On Gossamer's Cabana Cotton range is 94% cotton and 6% spandex in Peruvian pima cotton, described as beyond soft and comfortable with a delicate crochet trim, in a lightweight silhouette that is perfect for everyday wear. Breathable, soft, and the right default for the six pairs you wear most.
Mesh is the invisibility lane. The Gossamer Mesh styles are 100% nylon, and the brand lists three traits: low-rise fit, ultra lightweight Italian Mesh, and air dry in under 8 minutes. That last one is the practical detail, because everything in this range is hand wash only.

The same fabric logic applies at bedtime, which we cover separately in our guide to choosing sleepwear you will never want to take off.
Step 3: Pick two silhouettes and stop
Almost nobody needs five cuts. Pick a primary and a secondary, then buy depth in both.
- Hi-cut brief gives full coverage with a high leg line. On Gossamer offers it in both Cabana Cotton and Gossamer Mesh, the latter described as full coverage and comfort in an invisible silhouette.
- Bikini is the middle ground, described in the mesh version as sexy coverage and comfort in an invisible silhouette, and in the cotton version as a lightweight everyday essential.
- Hip-G thong is the no-lines option and the brand's own bestseller in the Gossamer Mesh fabric.
A good default pairing is cotton hi-cut or bikini as the primary, mesh Hip-G as the secondary. That covers loose clothing and fitted clothing without owning anything you never wear.
Step 4: Get the sizing right the first time
Sizing differs between the two halves of the range, and mixing them up is the most common ordering mistake.
The cotton briefs, bikinis and hi-cut styles run S, M, L and XL. The Hip-G thong styles use paired sizing: XS/S, S/M, M/L and L/XL. Bras are separate again, with the Next To Nothing Micro T-Shirt Bra listed in bands 32, 34 and 36 with cups from A to DDD.
Order one 3-pack in your best-guess size before committing to a full drawer refresh. Three pairs across a week tells you far more about fit than one pair on one day.
Step 5: Add the two bras that cover most outfits
You do not need a bra wardrobe. You need one soft bra and one smooth bra.
The Cabana Cotton Unlined Underwire Bra is the soft one: unlined and pad-free, with 2-ply moulded cotton and spandex cups, light underwire support, a plunging neckline, delicate flat elastic trimming along the edges, a tonal logo elastic on the bottom band, breathable 2-ply cotton and spandex wings, and fully adjustable straps with silver hardware.

The Next To Nothing Micro T-Shirt Bra is the smooth one: 74% nylon and 26% elastane with 4-way stretch, lightweight microfibre, fit flexibility, narrow straps and light elastic. Between them you are covered for both a linen shirt and a fitted knit.
Add the Cabana Cotton Reversible Cami if you layer, since it uses the same 94% cotton and 6% spandex and the same crochet trim. You can build the whole set in one order at On Gossamer.
Step 6: Set a care routine you will actually follow
Every piece in the range carries the same instruction: hand wash separately, cold water, only non-chlorine bleach when needed, line dry, low iron if needed. Fine mesh and unlined cotton cups do not survive a machine cycle the way thick synthetics do.
The workable habit is a two-minute rinse in the sink at the end of the day, then hanging to dry. The mesh styles air dry in under eight minutes, so they are back in rotation the same evening. Cotton takes longer, which is another argument for owning enough cotton pairs to cover the gap.
Keep colours together in the drawer rather than by silhouette. On Gossamer repeats a small palette across styles, including Deep Wisteria, Champagne, Delphinium Blue, Thistle, Country Blue and Black, so a colour-first drawer stays tidy on its own.

Step 7: Rotate, and know when to replace
Underwear almost always fails at the elastic long before the fabric wears through. When a waistband stops springing back after a wash, that pair is finished, however good the cotton still looks.
Rotation is what buys you time. Wearing the same three pairs on repeat while nine sit untouched puts every wash cycle onto the same elastic. Keeping the drawer as a single stack and always taking from the bottom spreads wear evenly across the set with no effort at all.
The two fabrics also age differently, which is worth planning for. Peruvian pima cotton softens as it goes and tends to loosen gradually, so cotton pairs drift out of the rotation one at a time. Fine Italian mesh holds its shape longer but shows snags sooner, so keep it away from jewellery, zips and anything with hooks when you are washing by hand.
A starter plan you can copy
- One Cabana Cotton 3-pack in your primary silhouette, for daily wear.
- One Gossamer Mesh Hip-G 3-pack, for fitted clothing.
- One Cabana Cotton Unlined Underwire Bra, for soft everyday support.
- One Next To Nothing Micro T-Shirt Bra, for thin and fitted tops.
- Optional: one Triple Mesh print pair in Heavenly Floral or Moody Floral, for occasions.
That is six to eight pieces covering nearly every outfit, in a single palette, with one care routine and no duplicates gathering dust at the back of the drawer. Once you know which silhouette you keep reaching for, add depth there and nowhere else. For the wider fabric argument, our sustainable underwear buying guide compares organic cotton against modal alternatives.
Start with the two 3-packs and the soft bra at the On Gossamer store, and build outward from what you actually wear.
